The Facts about Registration and Citizen Ownership
TASER CITIZEN DEFENSE SYSTEM
The TASER® technology has proved itself an effective and safe self-protection tool since 1994 for over 125,000 private citizens, many of whom do not want firearms in their homes for safety reasons. We have successfully instituted several safeguards that make TASER technology a responsible self-defense tool with our cutting edge AFID program that disperses 20-30 serialized confetti that identifies the owner of the TASER device. Our unique AFID program has successfully deterred criminal use for the past decade. Moreover, we conduct a comprehensive Social Security Number background search that checks felony and terrorist watch lists and verifies the age and identity of web store citizen purchasers. In addition, we provide a free training one-hour training session to citizens who purchase TASER devices in conjunction with local law enforcement TASER instructors. These safeguards combined with registration, verification and tracking systems ensure maximum protection to all parties while enhancing overall community safety.
DETAILS: Our AFID program enforces accountability for each use of the TASER and has worked successfully for over a decade with citizen sales and involves three factors: registration, verification and tracking. At the time of purchase, we gather extensive personal information to verify the identity and background of the prospective buyer with the understanding that we will not release the information and it will be kept confidential. This data maintains the integrity of our Anti-Felon Identification (AFID) system as private unless a TASER device is used in the commission of a crime in which we can trace the identity of the unit and the owner of the device through the confetti that is deployment any time our TASER devices are deployed.
Each TASER Cartridge sold for use with the TASER has a unique serial number. This serial number is printed in a bar code format on the back of each TASER Cartridge. At the time the probes are packed into each TASER Cartridge, approximately 20-30 pieces of film printed with the serial number of that Air Cartridge are loaded behind them. When the TASER is deployed, these AFID tags are dispersed at the scene. The large number of AFIDS and their small size makes it impractical to clean up. When police are called to investigate any TASER use, they can find these tags and contact TASER International for a complete trace on the serial number.
ACCOUNTABILITY
TASER International was founded to create safer personal protection alternatives, while utilizing technologies to maximize public safety and minimize the potential for misuse.
To purchase a TASER X26 or a TASER C2 it comes down three factors: Registration, verification and tracking.
TASER X26C: At the time of purchase, we gather extensive personal information to verify the identity and background of the prospective buyer with the understanding that we will not release the information and it will be kept confidential. This data maintains the integrity of our Anti-Felon Identification (AFID) system as private unless a TASER device is used in the commission of a crime in which we can trace the identity of the unit and the owner of the device through the confetti that is deployment any time our TASER devices are deployed. Online purchases of TASER X26C units require a valid Social Security Number in which ChoicePoint verifies this information and reviews for felonies, terrorist watch lists and proof of age. The device can then be purchased via credit card which is also verified.
Purchases of TASER C2 units:
TASER C2: The TASER C2 is the first device to incorporate a revolutionary new public safety background check technology called SureCheck™. With SureCheck, TASER C2 units are shipped in an inactivated state. They cannot be used until the end user successfully completes a background check from the privacy of their own home using a secure web site or a toll-free 800 number. After completing the background check, the user is issued an activation code unique to their serial number. The TASER C2 will work only after entering the activation code.
HISTORY
•The first TASER brand devices were sold to the public since 1994 called the AIR TASER Model 34000.
•The second generation personal protection units were called the ADVANCED TASER M18 series and were available in 1999.
•The third generation technology available to citizens was the TASER X26C in Sept 2004.
•The next generation TASER C2 is available now for advance orders with first shipments scheduled for April, 2007.
All shipments from TASER International are entered into our shipment tracking system. The AFID program was developed and implemented by TASER International at our own cost. It is not required by law; we think it's the right thing to do. No other self-defense device weapon in the world — guns, knives, chemical and pepper sprays, electronic defense units, or batons — can be traced from evidence at the scene of the crime to the registration of the user. It all comes back to responsibility.
KEY POINTS:
TASER Cartridges: 15-foot Air Cartridges. (Note that the 21, 25 and 35-foot TASER Cartridges are for law enforcement only)
TASER X26C: The main difference in the X26C vs. X26 law enforcement model is that the X26C model uses a 10-second cycle vs. a 5-second cycle and the range. Citizens have 15 foot range versus 25 foot range for law enforcement. Moreover, the X26C trigger can be triggered several times to create a 30second cycle. The user can then deploy the X26C, squeeze the trigger 3 times quickly to create a 30second cycle (3 x 10 second cycle = 30 seconds), place the X26C on the ground and depart a dangerous scene while the X26C safely disables the intruder. The law enforcement version cannot be squeezed multiple times to create back to back cycles. The law enforcement X26 uses a 5-second cycle. It can be overridden by the user but the instant the finger is off the trigger, the cycle stops. Multiple trigger pulls will not change the 5-second cycle either.
TIMING CYCLE
TASER C2: The timing cycle is 30-seconds total upon its activation. Its pulse rate is slowed down after the first 10-seconds from 17 pulses per second to an average of 10 pulses per seconds.
POWER
•ADVANCED TASER M18L/M18: 18 watts; 0.50 joules per pulse into load; and 3.6mA avg. current
•TASER X26C: 5 watts; 0.07 joules per pulse; and 2.1 mA average current
•TASER C2 (approximately): 5 watts; 0.07 joules per pulse; 2.1 mA average current
